LOVE IT or LEAVE IT – Duncan Hines Frosting Creations

002I recently purchased Duncan Hines new Frosting Creations frosting starter with a little mix of their cotton candy flavour to put in for Evan’s 4th Birthday cupcakes.  After mixing the product together to put it onto cupcakes we tried the taste of the icing as everyone always should before slathering it on their yummy cupcakes and was honestly a bit mortified at the taste.

The cotton candy flavor tastes like chemicals and leaves a pretty bad after taste something reminiscent of smoking a pack of cigarettes and eating some old cotton candy.

Checking on the back of the frosting and the flavoring packet it contains a lot of ingredients – many of which are chemical names.  001
Personally I wouldn’t recommend that you purchase this product.  Spend your money on natural ingredients to make your own butter cream frosting or if you’re into quick use frostings and need something that TASTES good stick to buying Betty Crocker’s Whipped Vanilla which you can find on sale for 1/3 of the price.

002Not only did it really kinda taste bad but the flavor and coloring didn’t mix perfectly into the frosting and left little visible granules in the icing although you couldn’t tell when eating the product.

It comes in a ton of different flavors which is nice such as Strawberry Shortcake, Cotton Candy, Bubble Gum, White Chocolate Raspberry, Orange Creme, Chocolatey Mint, Chocolatey Marshmallow and Caramel.

I’ve contacted the manufacturer to see if maybe something is wrong with this product. Maybe it’s just me? My opinion though is to:

LEAVE IT!

What do you think? What flavour did you try and did you like it?

I recently tried the strawberry shortcake flavor on strawberry cupcakes. I didn’t use the recommended icing, I stuck with Superstores No Name brand, as it’s cheaper and I find it very similar to the brand name.

I found the it mixed in fairly well, and colored nicely.

The flavor however, the was certainly a strawberry flavor to it, but it had an aspartame like after-taste.

I would not recommend this product, nor will I use it again. At around $1.00 per flavor pack per use I also don’t find it a good value. Bulk Barn (and probably many other stores) sell concentrated liquid flavor in small bottles for $2-$4 and it lasts a long time, as you don’t require much and can adjust flavor to your own preference. It doesn’t add much color, however cheap food coloring goes along way as well.
