Volunteering with Lunches With Love

This is Nate Unrau – a 12 year old kid in Winnipeg with a giant heart of gold.  After making lunches to hand out at the downtown Winnipeg food mission he and his family discovered what a great need there is in Winnipeg – a need that they knew they could help to fill.  He is on an ambitious mission to feed Winnipeg’s homeless.  The family formed a group called Lunches With Love.

You can join their facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/LunchesWithLoveWinnipeg?fref=ts

We all got together Saturday morning (as they do every 2 weeks) in our best wear – white aprons, hair nets, and rubber gloves to carefully and lovingly prepare HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of sandwiches which went into bagged lunches to deliver to the hungry.

It was a wonderful sight to see that all these people come together on a regular basis to donate their time, money, food and the occasional joke or two to this get together in support of the needy here in our own city.  What a wonderful way to repay our own blessings in life to make sure that others in need are taken care of and not forgotten.  It’s sad to think that hunger is still an issue in our city at this time.

Each paper bag is decorated with warm and loving messages by the children at the local school.

How can you help?

1)You can help by donating grocery gift cards or food/supplies to the group so that they can continue to have the resources to put together hundreds of lunches every two weeks.
They’re always in need of:

  • soft fruit – oranges, bananas
  • veggies
  • tuna
  • eggs
  • mayonaise
  • paper bags
  • bread
  • sandwich sized Ziploc bags
  • snack items that can be put into the lunches like fruit cups, muffins, cookies, granola bars etc.

2)You can donate your volunteer time – and come out for some camaraderie and laughs while you open tons of tuna cans, put together eggs and tuna and bag sandwiches with tricky vinyl gloves all for the hungry in Winnipeg.

3)You can vote for their cause in a contest here:

If they receive the most votes Scott Burton will run for 24 continuous hours in support of Lunches With Love.  Luches with Love would also receive 2000.00 from Tensor! What a lot of supplies that could buy to feed the hungry in our city.

More info:
“24 Hour Marathon to Fight Hunger” THE EVENT: Scott Burton will run for 24 continuous hours around a 4.2 km loop of commonly used roads and sidewalks in the Charleswood area of Winnipeg in support of community charity “Lunches With Love”. Beginning and ending at Beaverlodge School from June 12 8:00 am to June 13 8:00 am. The aim is to bring together an entire community to help the less fortunate. THE NON-PROFIT: “Lunches with Love” – a community-based charity that prepares lunches for the homeless of Winnipeg. They are always in need of food donations and volunteers to do their great work. This was started by Nathan Unrau – a student of Westdale Junior High School.”

4) You can help this little family get the word out. Share this post and their Facebook page and let your friends know about this great need in our home town of Winnipeg.
